D.C. police are now watching live images from dozens of surveillance cameras posted in high-crime parts of the city, hoping to respond faster to shootings, robberies and other offenses and catch suspects before they get away.
Since August 2006, the city has installed 73 cameras across the city, mostly on utility poles, at a cost of about $4 million. But until recently, officers were using them mainly as an investigative tool -- checking the recordings after crimes were committed in hopes of turning up leads and evidence.
The District is following cities such as Baltimore, Chicago, New York and Philadelphia, where police have actively monitored live camera scenes for years. London is often credited with having the most extensive network -- 500,000 cameras that make up the "Ring of Steel," dating to the early 1990s. "I'd love to have the whole city wired like London," said Lanier, adding that she didn't anticipate that becoming a reality.

Jerry...Michael T Justice is a socialist. He DETESTS liberty. He believes government will be able to solve all the problems of the poor with the 100% income tax plan. Well, unless you missed the 20th century, we have seen that plan. No thanks.
Mike
Really
Are you the Mike that talks about Energy all the time in your calls?
Did you go to my blog?
Hell no I'm not the limo lib from overland park. I went to your blog but you can't comment anonymously. Don't let we-shall-overcome-living-in-johnson-county convince you that "they are only trying to feed their families." They are paying cash IN FULL for a HOUSE in mexico after one year of hard work (given its 60 plus hours a week). So, they go back and live well in mexico, eventually, and the only people hurt by them are the poor in America. Ah, reality and KKFI...what a contrast!

Many black voices have risen in opposition to the very idea of reparations for slavery. Walter Williams, chairman of the Department of Economics at George Mason University, describes the call for reparations "just another scam" and argues that at this point in history, "slave owners cannot be punished and slaves cannot he rewarded. Black people in our country have gone further than any other race of people. You cannot portray blacks as victims. It's an insult to their progress and success. Most of [today's] problems have nothing to do with race; they're social and economic."
The call for reparations, states Michael Meyer, executive director of the New York Civil Rights Coalition, "is an embarrassment of muddled thinking--but then, foolishness and pie-in-the-sky sounding off are par for those who believe the world owes them. ... However one defines it, 'reparations' is just another word for the old hustle." But columnist Charles Krauthammer proposed "a historic compromise, a monetary reparation to blacks for centuries of oppression in return for the total abolition of all programs of racial preference; a one-time cash payment in return for a new era of irrevocable color blindness." Is he serious? How much cash is enough to "settle the score"--$l5 per black? Sounds uncomfortably like the old slave auction, but look who's holding the gavel this time.
The fact is that the problem facing black Americans has nothing to do with a legacy of slavery and, as a result, can hardly be ameliorated by "reparations." The problem is that many black leaders and groups have a vested interest in proclaiming that things are bad and getting worse. Yet, while black leaders persist in this direction, the facts vitiate their claims.

"Black Americans have achieved unprecedented progress. Persistent problems have more to do with the disintegration of the family structure than the continuing legacy of slavery."
AMEN!!

What say you MT?
Interesting
I wonder what percentage of African Americans are for reparations and how many are against?

Hello! Air America heroin/opium smuggling during the Vietnam war and afghan/soviet war, a lot of the returning soldiers were addicts. The series of investigations Dark Alliance by Gary Webb on The Cocaine Importing Agency(CIA) and funding the Contras in Nicaragua and causing an endemic deterioration of the black community by crack addiction. The killing and disbanding of black leaders and groups. The blacks while segregated burgeoned as a society. Can you say the WAR ON DRUGS!
Big Dog you are quoting the effect- tell me what the cause is. How did they get there? Please stop drinking the fluoridated water:-)
Respectfully: OZ
As if to say OZ; Black America are the only ones addicted to Crack or any other drug for that matter.
Stop drinking the koolaid OZ!!

Snitching goes high-tech in Kansas City.
In the Kansas City area, cameras have been put up on both sides of the state line to monitor suspected criminal activity.
The projects are being funded by the Kansas City Metropolitan Crime Commission. The commission also operates the local Crime Stoppers Hotline Program.

"...I don’t believe cameras will prevent crime." said Kansas City, Kansas Police Chief Breshears in a Special Session of The Unified Government Commission of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas on JULY 16, 2007.

"It is expected to be a successful endeavor that will expand throughout the region." Said Major Tom Dailey of the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department in an Emergency Services meeting of the MARC organization on May 8, 2007.

The MARC organization handles, among other things, coordination with Homeland Security for dealing with incidents of terrorism.
Police and certain citizens will be able monitor the cameras from their homes through a secure internet site.

It's all a conspiracy theory and they need to make sure we don't run red lights.
That's why on Lee's Summit Road in Independence, just south of 23rd st. they are building an intersection that didn't even exist before....with cameras.
Someone tell me there is a problem with running a red light that didn't exist before.
